Taiwan becomes first Asian nation to approve same-sex marriage

• In a landmark decision, Taiwan's parliament became the first in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage on May 17, 2019.

• The island's lawmakers passed a law allowing same-sex couples to form exclusive permanent unions and a second clause that would let them apply for a marriage registration with the government agencies.

• The move marks a huge victory for the LGBT community of Taiwan, who has campaigned for years to have similar of equal marriage rights as heterosexual couples.

• It also places Taiwan at the vanguard of Asia's rapidly growing gay rights movement.
